Prompto has nearly a year of growth in Duplicity, and for the most part, aside from the relationships he’s formed with other people, he’s the same. Yet, there are some subtle differences that should be noted here.

First, his memory of canon events differs. Upon entering Duplicity, Prompto’s canon point was chapter 9, just before the disaster at Altissia. He’d been in the city with Ignis for a while, who was close to the same canon point, but when Noctis showed up originally, he told Prompto what he could about the future (though he omitted quite a bit). He learned the truth about his origins but only inasmuch as Noctis himself knew—details were blurry since Noctis didn’t know exactly what had happened to Prompto. And though he was upset about it, he pushed on and decided to ignore it. Later, when Noctis left the city, he still had too many questions but chose to continue on without overthinking it. When Noctis appeared in the city a second time and several events later, Noctis confessed and told him about the prophecy and how he was destined to die to end the Starscourge and save Eos. It was a lot to accept considering he still didn’t know anything about the future – Noctis felt guilty for shoving him off the train and Prompto didn’t blame him for it, even though he hadn’t lived through it – but he promised Noct that they would find a different way to change the future. After Prompto’s own canon update, he struggled with trying to accept himself as he was and told the people he was closest to at the time – Ignis, Noct, Kara, Ezio – the truth about himself, and with their acceptance, he was able to find a little more closure about that part of himself.

At least, initially looking at Prompto, this is the general assessment most people would come away with about him. He tries his hardest to be upbeat and not let down those around him simply because he’s always seeking vindication that he’s wanted and not something that can be thrown away. So, in general, he’s mostly playful and strives to be the one to always cheer up anyone who might be feeling down or sad about something; this plays into the one aspect of his life where he really desires to be useful, though it’s done with a genuineness that demonstrates he is also caring. He just prefers to do that in his own way.

Yet, cracking through the exterior into the deeper parts of him, there is much more to Prompto than his cheerful attitude and sometimes short attention span. For example, he is not comfortable in formal situations and often feels out of place because of it despite being best friends with a prince. Part of this stems from his quite lonely and sad childhood. When he'd had the chance to befriend a "stray", his attachment to it was nearly instantaneous, hoping for some form of friendship in an otherwise parent-vacant, friendless life. Yet, as soon as the puppy ran off, he seemed to accept that as the fate he'd been given: that he would be always be alone. It wasn't until he received the letter from Lunafreya, which gave him the courage and reassurance he needed to pursue something greater than himself, that he found strength to leave that lonely part of his life behind. Kindness, too, attracts people, and Prompto is exceptionally kind to others no matter how they might treat him. However, that doesn’t dismiss the fact that he exudes symptoms of imposter syndrome because of his origins.

In Episode Prompto, there’s in-depth exploration of Prompto actually being a clone of Verstael Besithia, an Imperial researcher, and was essentially “made” to become part of Niflheim’s magitek army. Because it had been a long-kept secret of his, Prompto had always strived to be a person worthy of being Noct’s friend because he’s afraid of being abandoned. Even when he tells the group about what he is, he still fears that they won’t accept him and cast him aside. He spends a large majority of the DLC struggling with even considering the truth behind everything he's learned because he constantly worries about not fitting in or being good enough as he is—the Number One Problem of feeling like a fake and not offering anything to anyone regardless of his generally gentle personality; being a traitor to the crown and Lucis wouldn't exactly be a welcome thing to anyone. But again, with the right encouragement from someone who sees through all that, he manages to overcome it enough to search out his friends (thanks Aranea). Pulling strength from the people who generally care about him helps to pull him out funks and even depressive states where he constantly berates himself. Still, it takes even more for Prompto to fight through his problems after Ardyn tortures him, which is Noct telling him they're doing this to create a world where people can be accepted. Equal.

Other things to note about Prompto’s personality: he knows a lot of pop culture (often referencing these things a little too much), is really into cameras and photography (which makes him a bit of a technophile), is a little claustrophobic (as well as afraid of heights), and kind of hates bugs. He’s also known to complain about being outdoors, though whether or not that’s a by-product of simulating Noct’s own complaints or because he actually hates it isn’t particularly clear. He tends to be a bit anxious about things sometimes, seen in the way he can get jumpy, and regardless of how much he might actually dislike the outdoors, Prompto is very much a “pet guy”, seen in his excitability whenever he’s around chocobos or dogs or any other type of animal that he can get his hands on to said pet.

Though he doesn’t have the experience and isn’t as combat-hardened as Ignis or Gladio (and even Noct), Prompto always tries to do his best and puts effort into everything that he does to get a goal accomplished to the best of his ability. His perseverance is strong when he gives himself something to aspire to (such as when he spent years trying to project himself in a way he thought was worthy of being Noctis’ friend and then training to go on the trip to help protect Noct), and honestly, he just wants the best for everyone around him, even at the cost of himself.

CRAU ADDITIONS:
Prompto’s personality, while generally the same, has changed in some subtle ways—mostly in regards to sex. Initially, he’d been hesitant and pretty shy to try to find partners, especially given how insecure he can be about himself, and he almost ran into the problem of not meeting the city quota in the first month. But after meeting Ivy, he became a little more comfortable with himself sexually. Learning to accept that had been a lot easier since it gave him something else to focus on that wasn't the complications of back home that had followed him into Duplicity. Several months later, when he began to really know Ezio, he also opened up to the possibility of kinkier things, and that brief relationship broadened Prompto’s horizons even more. As reflected in the general section above, Prompto comes to term with things easier if he tries to take that first step forward and trust that his friends or people he's close to aren't going immediately dismiss him, but it's with others convincing him that he’s worth the time and effort that he begins to really believe he's worth something. Now, even though he’s still kind of awkward and charming, he’s forthright about his wants when it comes to sex and doesn’t have an issue trying to instigate as long as he knows the other person is interested.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Prompto is a normal human without any exceptional abilities. He is, however, an expert with any type of gun – mostly long-range stuff – and different kinds of tech he can use as weapons.
