it's only a peculiar question in that prompto literally thinks about it all the time. what would have happened if he hadn't grown up in insomnia? would he have been just another troop in the ranks? some disposable body in a war that had been going on for longer than he's been alive? that isn't a choice he'd have consciously made himself, but he still considers it, pressing his thumb against the tattoo on his wrist and hating it more than he ever has. ]

he pushes open the window of the apartment so he can sit in it and light a cigarette as he texts back. ]

grinning down at his phone, Reno starts to key out a response, something like "so did I, sorry about the paint job tho haha..." he's no artiste to begin with and being mostly distracted by Prompto (and then indeed fully distracted by Prompto) hadn't helped the skill issues.
then the second message comes through and he pauses, reads it. reads it again. Reno's old enough that it's been a while since he thought of attraction in terms of like like, but Prompto is younger, so sweet, so sincere. his grin softens, and he's just drunk enough that he he deletes his previous message to say instead, ]

[ a one-handed text, finding the silence creepy enough that he doesn't loiter as he walks. somehow, though, it makes him brave enough to take a stab at flirting without some sort of subtlety. ]
[ the text both makes Reno laugh and knocks the wind out of him a little. it's shockingly bold from Prompto, who usually blushes when Reno even looks at him a certain way. ]

[ his windowsill overlooks the street in front of the building, so Reno keeps an eye on it as they text, looking for the glow of Prompto's phone. when he sees it, he watches fondly until Prompto is close enough to hear when Reno sticks two fingers in his mouth and whistles down at him. ]
[ if he had time to check his messages, he really might have blushed a little at that comment. as it is, he's trying to keep his steps even and nearly jumps out of his skin at the whistle from above. so that??? he was definitely not expecting.
the moment of panic is fleeting as he looks up. ]
You scared me, [ prompto calls back, just loud enough that reno is sure to hear. ] What're you doing hanging out the window?

[ Reno can't help but laugh, watching the way Prompto startles visibly even from his third-floor window. there's really something about him, something that stirs an oddly protective instinct in Reno that he hasn't felt for years and years and years. ]
Waitin' for you. [ and definitely not smoking...... Reno super subtly and super carefully leans forward slightly and puts his cigarette out on the windowsill. he doesn't drop the butt yet, though (he's waiting for Prompto to go into the building before he does that). ] Hurry up, sunshine.
[ he waits until he sees Prompto disappear into the building, then drops his cigarette butt out the window like an asshole and closes the frame behind him. then he crosses the apartment to pull the door open, leaning against the doorframe while he waits for Prompto to come up the stairs. or the elevator, whatever. ]
[ he barely hears the rest of it, dashing inside and deciding that the practical thing to do is climb the stairs as quickly as possible rather than wait for the elevator. the fact he's a little out of breath once he reaches the top doesn't hinder him, trying to calm his racing heart on his way to reno's apartment. there's really no reason things should be like this, all that excitement curling tight in his gut as he sees him waiting at an open door.

prompto had never figured something like this could feel so easy with another person. he's been comfortable around noct for years now, but that's a different sort of affection. this is a little more complicated, especially when he'd just previously confessed that he liked reno. (and reno had said the same.) it's dizzying, hardly bothered by the idea of kissing him out in the open. he curls his arms around him, ending the kiss with a slight huff as he nudges his nose into reno's. ]

but that's neither here nor there, for now. Reno's arms settle around Prompto's waist as he steps back to pull them both into Reno's apartment. he stays close, enough so that he can brush faint, barely-there kisses against Prompto's mouth as he says, ] But I woulda stayed if you asked.
